Kumasi gets Video Technology Learning Centres

The push towards effective teaching and learning in the Kumasi Metropolis has been given a boost by the launch of eight video technology learning centres. The centres are equipped with flat screen television sets, DVD players and well stocked libraries with relevant local educational video materials. Discovery Channel Global Educational Partnership (DCGEP), a non-governmental organization (NGO) is behind the project, which is being supported by Hendricks and Coca Cola African foundations. Dr Gail Ifshin, President of DCGEP, said they had trained more than 200 basic school teachers on how to apply the video technology in the classroom. The centres, she said, are providing education enrichment opportunities for over 4,000 pupils and 12,000 community members in Kumasi. Dr. Ifshin said through training, mentoring and the building of skills and confidence of teachers, the DCGEP and its partners had provided a network of individuals who are capable of teaching and transforming their communities. She said the positive power of television is being used to provide relevant information and support for development of under- resourced schools. Mrs Lordina Mahama, wife of the vice President, said the nation was grateful to DCGEP and its partners for the intervention. She said the use of video in teaching would complement the teachers' efforts to raise pupils' performance. She said no nation, society or community could achieve sustained development without education.
