5 More Regions: Don't Trust Mahama NPP

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said President John Mahama cannot be trusted to create five new regions as he has promised should he win a second term in the December 7 polls because his party failed to carry through a similar promise made in 2009 while he was vice president.

While presenting highlights of the NDC’s 2016 manifesto on Tuesday, Mr Mahama said he would have a team look into the feasibility of creating five more regions.

Responding to Mr Mahama’s promise, however, the Communications Director of the NPP, Nana Akomea, told journalists at a press conference: “When you are an incumbent and you make promises, we have to look at your record…”

According to him, the NDC’s failure to make good on its promise to carve out a region out of the Northern Region in 2009 makes Mr Mahama’s recent promise doubtful.

“So, way back in April 2009, Vice President Mahama said he was going to create another region out of the Northern Region,” Nana Akomea reiterated, adding that Mr Mahama reiterated the promise in October of that year.

“Eight years down the line, there has been no such region. Today …he is promising another region. So the question is, ‘What happened to the 2009 creation of a region out of the Northern Region?"
