The Ashanti Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), Mr. Samuel Asiamah, has called on political party leaders to join the campaign to make this year’s election road-accident-free.

He said as the nation edged closer to the December polls, it was important for all to be careful and work together to make the roads safe for everybody.

It should not be lost on the political parties that every vote counted and therefore the need to do more to prevent losing votes through road crashes.

Mr. Asiamah made the call through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi and outlined a number of measures the Commission had put in place to bring down road fatalities between now and the voting day.

These include deepening the conversation with the parties, safety education campaign and enforcement of road traffic laws.

He cautioned supporters of the various parties, particularly, motorbike riders to get right with the road-traffic regulations to prevent accidents.

Again, the practice where party faithful, packed themselves into the bucket of pick-up vehicles and drove carelessly through the cities, towns and villages, must end.

The warning comes against the backdrop of the unacceptable high number of people killed through road crashes during the election campaign period.

In the year 2008 election campaign period, 70 lives were lost, and 327 others suffered broken bones and cuts.

The situation was not any better in the 2012 polls, as 81 people were killed, with 581 others, getting hurt.

Mr. Asiamah said the trend could not continue and he underlined the determination of the Commission to work with all – the police, political parties and transport associations to check indiscipline and recklessness on the road.
