Standards Board to strengthen trade sector

The Ghana Standards Board (GSB) has stepped up efforts towards the implementation and sustainability of the standards component of the "Trade Sector Support Programme". The programme, which is under the Trade and Industry Ministry, was crafted to protect consumer interests and safety, Mr Adu Gyamfi Darkwah, Executive Director of the GSB, announced this n Kumasi, when he addressed the 40th World's Standards Day celebration in Kumasi on Friday. The day was on the theme: "Tackling climate change through standards." The programme entails enforcement of standards on the domestic market, productivity improvement, institutional upgrading, sanitary and market-oriented requirements. Implementation would protect the safety and interests of consumers, safeguard the environment and also deepen the nation's trade policy of ensuring good business practices. Mr Darkwah noted that improved trade leads to increased production, incomes and employment for the people. He said the board was working with stakeholders to raise awareness and promote the importance of standards and conformity assessment, as tools to improve market access and transfer of technology. In addition, the board is co-operating with industry, government departments and local authorities with the view to securing the adoption of standards in their endeavours. Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, President of Friends of Water and River Bodies, a non-governmental organisation, underscored the need for estate developers to ensure the introduction of new energy-efficient technologies in construction. He recommended the use of wood for building houses, explaining that, wood absorbs carbon, which is crucial in addressing global warming.
