Use sporting activities to unite Ghanaians - Gbediame

The Member of Parliament for Nkwanta South, Mr Gershon Kofi Bediako Gbediame, on Saturday appealed to managements of the various sporting disciplines to use sporting competitions and activities to unite the people who have been polarized by party politics over the years. Mr Gbediame said "For the first time in so many months I'm now so proud of being a Ghanaian since the victory of the Black Satellites in far away Egypt filled almost all our TV and Radio stations with soccer, rather than the dominant politics on our airwaves". The Member of Parliament made the appeal when he collaborated with sportspave.com, a United States of America based sports website to donate two sets of Jerseys worth about GHC 3,000 to Hoops, a Cape Coast based basketball club and also officially launched the website in Ghana. Mr Gbediame said the website's main objective was to unearth talents in the lesser known sporting activities such as basketball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Judo, Wrestling, Athletics, polo, golf and indoor games and appealed to managements of those disciplines to collaborate with the website for the needed support. "We are just beginning and we hope that all of you will work with us to replace party politics with sports which has taken over all our airwaves in the country." Mr Gbediame said over the years' Ghana had placed high premium on only soccer and boxing which was not good enough for the country that had talents in all sporting disciplines and only need to be developed. Mr Claudius Thompson of the Hoops Basketball Club commended sportspave.com for the gesture and promised to justify the support given them by working hard to represent the country in subsequent regional basketball competitions. He said the team which had existed for some years now has been able to secure scholarship for 12 of their members who are currently studying and playing for basketball clubs in the United States of America.
