The Progressive People’s Party today filed their nomination to contest the presidential race in the 2016 elections.
Despite EC’s refusal of 50, 000 Ghana cedis filing fees of other aspirants – they accepted that of the PPP.
The National Chairman of the PPP, Nii Allotey Brew Hammond and National Treasurer Mr Felix Ograh filed the nomination on behalf of the flagbearer, Dr Nduom – NEAT FM’s Naana Ntiri reported from the headquarters of the Electoral Commission in Accra.
The PPP sued the Commission over the fees after they filed an interlocutory injunction application to stop the EC from going ahead to receive the said fees together with the nomination forms from Thursday.
Per a Supreme Court decision, an application for interlocutory injunction technically applies as an injunction, hence the EC cannot go ahead to collect the filing fees from today.
The amount, which was announced by the EC on September 8 at an Inter Party Advisory Committee, has been described by many political parties as outrageous and illegal, triggering the lawsuit by the PPP a week ago.
Naana Ntiri reported that - the EC Chairperson, Mrs Charlotte Osei said even though the PPP knew of the legal implications, they still brought the money, so they [EC] have accepted it.
