GAWU Marks Golden Jubilee in The Volta Region

The Volta Regional Branch of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) commemorated its 50th milestone at Hohoe with a call on the government to ratify the International Labour Conventions on the Termination of Employment; Health and Safety in Agriculture; and Maternity Protection. A communiqu signed by Mr Edward Kareweh, the Deputy General Secretary of GAWU, called for the adoption of domestic and international trade policies that preserve domestic markets for domestic producers of products such as rice, poultry and guinea fowl. It urged the government to review the interim Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the active participation of civil society representatives in order to remove the unjust clauses in it. It called for appropriate legislation and mechanisms to curtail land "grabbing" by foreigners and asked the government to be proactive with agricultural issues. The government, it said, should also support small-holder farmers and food production for the attainment of sufficiency in foods that thrive in the country for both the local and the Sub-regional markets. The statement encouraged farmers and unorganized workers in the agricultural sector to join GAWU to build the desired unity for the accelerated development of the country. It said GAWU would support government policies inasmuch as they were consistent with the interest of the people of Ghana. The celebration coincided with the International Day for Decent Work.
