Upper East Has 949 Flash Points - Police Commander

The Upper East Regional Commander of Police, DCOP Simon Yaw Afeku, has said the Region had 949 flash points out of the 1,222 polling stations.

The Police Commander said even though all polling stations were potential security threats, the identified flash points would be given special attention by the security to ensure that no violence erupted to disturb the election.

The Police Commander made this known at a press encounter organized by the Regional Media Advisory Council in Bolgatanga in collaboration with the National Media Commission and supported by STARGhana.

DCOP Afeku said peace did not have a substitute and so the Police were well prepared to curtail any early warning signs of conflict during and after the election.

He said Regional, Municipal and District taskforces and technical working bodies were in place to work within the framework of the law to ensure that conflicts and violence did not erupt in any part of the Region.

DCOP Afeku urged the political parties to avoid carrying weapons on the election day since it was not needed, saying even the registered guns were not acceptable and should not be handled by anyone.

He urged the electorate to be tolerant of opposing views and called on the media to remain focused and circumspect especially in matters of security to ensure that what was being put in the public domain did not fuel violence.
