Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba, John Akologu Tia has exhorted the electorate not to take the promises being made by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) serious.
These promises, he contended were only intended to lure the electorate to vote for NPP in the December elections.
Speaking at a separate campaign launch of the party in seven constituencies in the Upper East Region, he cited the admission by former President J.A. Kufuor that when you are in opposition you view issues differently only to be hit by the reality when you are in power.
He intimated that the NPP broke a number of promises, including the promise to reduce petrol prices drastically, but immediately it won elections in 2000 it immediately increased the cost of petrol astronomically.
He said the NPP further promised to provide thousands of jobs for Ghanaians but did nothing about the unemployed situation whilst in power.
Mr. Tia advised Ghanaians to ignore the NPP’s rhetoric that it would provide a dam each, for the almost one million villages in Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions.
Mr. Tia later told the Times on the sidelines that after visiting various constituencies in the region he was optimistic that the NDC would win all 15 constituencies in the Upper East Region, adding that President John Mahama got over 80 per cent of the votes.
Touching on the seeming problems stemming from the NDC’s primaries, he said they have been able to resolve them and losers have now joined the various campaign teams of their respective candidates.
Others he said had also provided motorbikes and ‘T’ shirts for the campaign.
The people of the Upper East Region he noted would forever be grateful to the founder of the NDC, former President Jerry John Rawlings who provided massive infrastructure for the northern regions.
He said it was continued by the late President John Evans Atta Mills and President John Dramani Mahama.
