Development Partners Demand More Action

Development Partners of the country such as the World Bank, DANIDA, CIDA, the EU, JICA, WATER AID, UNICEF and the African Development Bank among others have called for more collaboration and coordination among the various Ministries to ensure adequate supply of water and improved sanitation in the country. According to the partners, there is also the need for more funds to be allocated to the improvement of infrastructural facilities for water supply. The Development Partners raised these concerns at a meeting with the Ministers of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Local Government and Rural Development and a representative of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning as part of activities of the 1st Ghana Water Forum which ended in Accra today. The Development Partners also stressed on capacity building at the district and regional level in the management of water supply. They also urged government to translate its commitment to adequate water supply into real action. Commenting on the concerns raised by the development partners, the Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing, Hon. Albert Abongo said government has put in place laudable policies for sustainable water supply in the country but it will take some time for the impact of the policies to be felt. Mr. Stephen Ntow of Water Aid commented on the need for more action by government to improve water supply in an interview with Peace FM.
