They Posed As IGP And Nigerian Lawyer

Two Nigerians, Maximus Chukuma Amakari, 37, who posed as the legal officer at the Nigerian High Commission in Accra, and Nwabuisi Obia, 30, who faked identify as the Inspector-General of Police, Paul Quaye, are in the grips of the police. Briefing the Times yesterday, the Head of the Vetting and Crime Analysis Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters, Superintendent Denis Abade, said on October 6, the Nungua Police arrested Obia in an internet fraud case where he allegedly through correspondence introduced himself as the IGP to people. He said prior to Obias arrest, the police had information that someone had been sending mails, introducing himself to people as the IGP. Surveillance was subsequently placed on him until he was arrested in the act at a caf. He said when Obia was brought to the CID headquarters, Amakari surfaced that he was counsel for Obia and was therefore coming to bail him. Mr. Abade said following the complimentary card that Amakari produced, an enquiry was made at the Nigerian High Commission which came out that he was fake. When Amakari was questioned, he claimed he was once working at the High Commission but when the new Ambassador assumed duty he disposed of his service. Obia also told the Times that his arrest was a set-up. Superintendent Abade said the suspects are assisting the police in their investigations after which they will be put before court.
