'Girls Girls for Nana Akufo-Addo' Express Worry About EC's Conduct

The Girls Girls for Nana Akufo-Addo, a young initiative of the N.P.P Women’s Wing led by Otiko Afisah Djaba wish to express our worry about the Electoral Commission’s inability to provide the N.P.P with a hard copy of the voters register for the general elections on December 7, 2016.

It would be recalled that after the 2012 election petition, a special reform committee set up by the Electoral Commission to synthesize the various reforms proposed by the panel of Justices of the Supreme Court and political parties. One of the reforms proposed by the Committee and accepted by the Commission was for a copy of the final certified voters register to be presented to registered political parties at least 21 days before the elections.

The Electoral Commission has given the N.P.P a soft copy of the 2016 voter’s register which has some corrupted files, which cannot be accessed. The N.P.P’s Director of Elections request to the Commission to provide the party with an update on the damaged files has fallen on deaf eyes.  It has always been the practice in this country prior to every general election that, the Electoral Commission provides political parties with registers both in hard and soft copies. Unfortunately this year the Commission is saying they are not in a position to present a hard copy of the register to the N.P.P. No tangible reason has been given for this denial, however in the budget of the Electoral Commission it presented to fund the elections, provision has been made for hard copies of the voters register to be presented to all registered political parties.

We are therefore calling on the Electoral Commission to as a matter of urgency provide the New Patriotic Party (N.P.P) and indeed all political parties contesting this year’s election with hard copies of the certified voters register to ensure  transparency, inclusiveness and credibility of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
