Make Justice Your Hallmark - Anglican Bishop To EC

The Right Reverend Dr Bishop Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, Anglican Bishop of Accra on Tuesday asked the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure justice for all political parties to ensure fairness in the December 7 elections.

He said justice for all players in the general election would make it clear for the electorate to accept the verdict of voters.

“Justice should not be denied anybody to affect the elections. The EC is part of the peace process hence the need for fairness and equality,” he said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

“Individuals seek fair and impartial treatment that is not based on skin colour, gender or sexual orientation. Justice can help individuals receive equal treatment. For that reason, however it is easy for justice to become an ambiguous concept for individuals from different cultures,” he said.

Bishop Torto said: “The Anglican Church is calling on all …to uphold justice and work together to secure the peace and security of the nation.”

He said peace for the elections should not be misconstrued as the absence of war since words could be as cutting as knife and piercing as arrows.

“Lies and defamation of character can be destructive. Politicians and the media in particular have often resorted to being economical with the truth and in the process inflaming passions and tarnishing the image of innocent persons.

He said even as the political parties went about their campaigning “let us continue to pray that each and all, especially the leadership, would be imbued with such right vision, sense of purpose and mission as will secure peace, security and unity.

“Ghanaians should end day with thoughts of peace; begin each day with thoughts of peace; continue thinking thoughts of peace throughout each precious day: and happiness will be ours,” he said.
