The Upper West Regional Secretariats of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace deal pledging their commitment to ensuring peaceful election on December 7.
The signing of the peace cloth, which was facilitated by the Women Situation Room-Ghana, an NGO after a peace walk, was witnessed by hundreds of women from organisations, departments, students and groups.
The march, dubbed: “Election 2016 Ghanaian women want peace in our hands” saw participants carrying placards with inscriptions such as “we stand for peace”, “we have nowhere to go, Ghana is all we have”, “Ghana needs you alive” and “Nkabom na ye p3”, among others.
Alhaji Abubakari Abdul Rahaman, Regional Chairman of the NPP, said the Party would do all within its capacity to ensure that the poll was violence free.
“We will ensure that the peace, which we are enjoying now is maintained before, during and after the elections and we hope that all the other political parties in this country will do the same.
“We are one people and we have one Ghana so there is no need carrying weapons or arms because of election,” he explained.
Mr Matthew Song Aabo, Regional Chairman of the NDC, also noted that there could be no meaningful development without peace and assured the people that the Party was ready to make peace in order to consolidate the country’s democracy.
Mrs Catherine Bob-Millar, Regional Chairman of Women Situation Room-Ghana, expressed the need for a peaceful election and urged all political party leaders and supporters to respect the electoral processes established by the Electoral Commission as well as accepting the outcome of the elections.
She gave the assurance that Ghanaian women would not relent in their efforts to ensure that there was peace in the country before, during and after the elections, adding that women and children are the worst affected during the incidence of violence.
