Fire Guts GPRTU Office

Barely five days after fire gutted and destroyed virtually everything at the Foreign Affairs Minister, another disaster has struck. This time it was the Odawna Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at the Kwame Nkrumah circle in Accra that had been destroyed by fire. Eyewitnesses told the Times that the fire started about 3:00am yesterday destroying documents, furniture and stationary of the branch office. According to Ama Serwaa, a trader, the fire started from a refuse container which was sited close to the CPRTU office. She noted that though one gentleman called for support to help put out the fire, he did not receive help. She attributed the fast spread of the fire to a container close by where engine oil, brake fluid and others were being kept. Madam Serwah said though a fire tender from the Ghana National Fire Service was called in, it arrived late. Besides, the water in it could not contain the fire so reinforcement of personnel and a tender was called in before the fire was put under control. She said while people struggled to put out the fire some squatters and drug dealers who live close to the GPTRU office and behind the Vodafone head office were busy stealing items from the GPRTU office and stores and kiosk close to the Odaw drainage. Efforts to reach the chairman of the branch, Kofi Oppong Addo, proved futile while his cell phone was engaged.
