Prez Mahama's Tribal Comments "Distasteful & Cheap" - B/A CPP Condemns

The Convention People's Party (CPP) has condemned President John Mahama’s comments on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during his campaign tour of the Upper West Region.

The party has described the President's statements as divisive and unfortunate.

On a campaign tour at Lawra in the Upper West Region over the weekend, the President called on all Northerners to abandon the NPP because Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will never be allowed to lead the NPP because the party does not care about northeners.

He expressed pity at Dr. Bawumia, an indigene of the north, claiming the party is using him.

The President's comments were not only frowned at but has also been condemned by many including some journalists.

In an interview with Peacefmonline.com, the Regional Communications Director for the CPP, Ali Dayinday said the President's comments will serve as breeding ground for further ethnocentric remarks to be made, if care is not taken, as the country prepares for the December polls.

"The President's comments were distasteful and cheap which should be condemned in no uncertain terms. People don't vote on tribal lines again," he revealed.

The CPP's Parliamentary candidate for the Berekum East constituency advised President Mahama to "see tribalism as the cause of conflict in many African countries and desist from it."

He added that being a Northerner himself, he had suffered intimidations from some NDC Communicators in the constituency on many occasions which could have potentially led to violence.
