Unemployment Cause Of Gambling

Parliamentary candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the Ayawaso Central constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Kofi Aidoo, says the high rate of unemployment in the country is the cause of gambling and betting amongst the youth today.

He consequently expressed fears that the growing unemployment situation, if not checked, particularly sports betting, will force young people in his constituency to use their parents as collaterals anytime soon.

Mr. Aidoo, who was addressing a mini-rally at Kokomlemle as part of the party’s flag-bearer’s Greater Accra regional tour, said that thousands of youth in the area were unemployed.

The development, he said, has brought untold hardship to the community.

In this regard, he urged his constituents to vote for the PPP presidential candidate, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, and him Kofi Aidoo to represent them in Parliament.

He also promised them of a resource centre in the constituency to serve as an alternative for betting.

Mr. Aidoo further assured the people that the Mallam Atta Market will be re-developed into an ultra-modern edifice to make it attractive for business.

For his part, the PPP flag-bearer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, called on the people to vote massively for Mr. Adioo for more jobs in the constituency.

Earlier at Odododiodoo constituency also in Accra, the party’s candidate for the area, William Larbi, called for positive change.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nduom has said the country’s enthusiasm in what he termed as its “lazy approach to taxation” was a big problem.

According to him, if Ghana moves away from that line, a lot would be accomplished including applying the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) which comes with a unique numbering scheme.

Dr. Nduom made the above observation when he took his turn at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Town Hall Debate for presidential candidates at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, November 22, 2016.

The debate which was on the theme: “Reinforcing the Pillars of Ghana’s Democracy,” saw only Dr. Nduom, Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Independent Presidential Candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah participating.

Presidential nominees—Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) respectively faled to participate in the event.

The PPP presidential candidate decried how government had piled taxes on energy knowing very well that the people cannot do without it, adding that when people and business are heavily taxed those who cannot cope will fold up.

To cure the situation, the business magnate suggested that the right things must be done like having in place a working national identification system, which comes with a unique numbering system and can trace people’s earnings and the taxes they pay.

Dr. Nduom continued that a PPP administration under his watch will increase productivity with low taxes, “so we can raise money by applying the funds that come from those producing.”

In his estimation the government was spending on infrastructure that was not needed, citing some cocoa producing, food crops and mining areas across the country which have bad road networks.
