Eric Opoku Must Resign As REGSEC Chair- Hopeson Adorye

The continuous stay of Hon. Eric Opoku, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Asunafo South as Chairman of the Regional Security Council is the biggest threat to the peace and harmony Ghanaians are enjoying in the round up to the December 7 presidential and parliamentary polls.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister is undeserving of the position as Chairman of the Regional Security after the many violent attacks perpetuated mainly against members of the opposition New Patriotic Party under his watch.

The countless violent attacks in the region arising from his desire to retain his seat as a member of Parliament and other seats could be described as evidence of his dislike for peace. Such a person cannot then be made to chair the regional Security Council.

The general public and the media will recall how Sankore, a relatively peaceful electoral zone has all of a sudden turned into a war zone as a result of the actions of Eric Opoku.

A situation where houses have been burnt, party officials chased out with machetes, fingers of a known NPP member chopped off, countless gun shots throughout the electoral processes from registration, through exhibition to transfer of votes.

In all these, the Brong Ahafo Regional Security Council has acted as a toothless bull dog. For years running, it has been unable to bring sanity to the area neither has the police been able to arrest and prosecute these vampires hired and trained to forment trouble.

We cannot remain unperturbed while the hard earned peace and security Ghanaians enjoy come under threat. As Chairman for Brong Ahafo Regional Security, he is mandated to ensure a serene and peaceful atmosphere within the region before, during and after the elections.

The scores of violent attacks, destruction of lives and property and the denial of Human rights to life and safety leave much to be desired of Mr. Eric Opoku.

In this wake, all hands must be on deck in calling for his immediate resignation. Civil society organizations, religious leaders and every well meaning Ghanaian must not sit on the fence and watch our Region turn into a state of lawlessness, chaos and anarchy.
