Ayews Return Is Encouraging - West Ham Chief

Hammers' chief David Sullivan is counting on the Ghana international for a revival after a poor start to the Premier League

West Ham United joint-chairman David Sullivan hopes Andre Ayew's return to full fitness will help lift the club from their current predicament.

The Hammers are going through a rough time with their inability to win any of their last five games in all competitions - Wednesday's 4-1 thrashing by Manchester United their latest setback.

Having finished the Premier League on seventh position last season, Slaven Bilic's side currently sit just two places above the relegation zone after matchday 13.

"Nobody is enjoying looking at the table at the moment but I hope we have now turned a corner," Sullivan told his club's official website.

"It has certainly been a frustrating time with injuries to key players.

"With our club record signing Andre Ayew back in action and Andy Carroll not far away from making a first-team return, the signs are looking a lot more encouraging.

"This was always going to be a testing time for the club with the run of hard games we were facing, but there is no doubt that the team is playing a lot better."

Ayew joined West Ham in August on a three-year deal from Swansea City, for whom he netted 12 times in 34 league outings.

He, however, suffered a hamstring injury on his Hammers' debut and was sidelined for three months.

He has made four topflight appearances upon his return, but questions have been raised over his sharpness following a run of nondescript performances.

He was conspicuously missing from Wednesday's heavy fall to Manchester United in the League Cup.
