The Central Region has made a strong and blunt statement that it will give no political party more than eight years in office. By its voting patterns over the last four elections, the region swings every eight years.
Interesting results
There have been some very interesting results from the region in this election.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made serious gains in the region in this election.
The Twifo Atti Mokwa seat, which has always been a National Democratic Congress (NDC) seat, has been won by the NPP.
Again, the Ekumfi seat, which has also historically been a no go area for the NPP, has been snatched.
Ato Cudjoe of the NPP polled 12,014 votes to beat the incumbent Abeiku Crentsil of the NDC who polled 11,482. This is the first time the NPP has taken the Ekumfi seat.
The NPP’s Elvis Donkor has also taken the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese seat which was being held by the NDC.
The two Cape Coast seats were shared between the two big parties.
Cape Coast South
After the parliamentary election in Cape Coast South, it was incumbent Kweku Rickketts Hagan of the NDC who was standing.
He polled 20,456 votes to beat his closest contender, Lawyer Michael Arthur Dadzie, who polled 19,718. Nana Addo, however, polled 20,977 to beat Mahama who polled 19,449 in the presidential contest.
In nearby Cape Coast North, Barbara Asher Ayisi of the NPP was the stronger of the aspirants, polling 19,475 votes to beat Kobby Acheampong who polled 16,309 votes.
In the Assin Central Constituency, it was a repeat of Ken Agyepong’s winning ways. He secured the seat once again for the NPP for the fifth time running.
He beat NDC’s Dr Kofi Blanskon, his closest contender, with over 7,000 votes, polling 17,979 while Dr Blankson had 10,618.
President Mahama did worse, polling 10,019 votes as against Nana Addo’s 18,368.
In Assin North, new on the block Abena Duruwaa Mensah of the NPP toppled incumbent Samuel Ambre of the NDC and secured the seat in by polling 15,553 votes, as against his 10,751 votes.
The Assin South seat as usual also went to the NPP’s Ntim Fordjour who polled 23,308 to beat NDC’s Sabina Appiah Kubi who polled 15,683 to further establish the NPP’s dominance in the Assin area.
In the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency, it was a head to head fight between the incumbent, Ato Cassiel Forson, who won with 25601 as against the NPP’s Ransford Kwesi Nyarko’s 21,903.
Jinx breakers
Samuel Atta Mills, younger brother of the late President, Prof. Atta Mills won the KEEA seat with 21,957, breaking the jinx that the KEEA seat is the sole preserve of doctors.
PPP’s John Sterlin polled 18,860, while the NPP’s Nana Ato Arthur had 15,960.
In the presidential race, the CPP polled 543, NDP had 62, NDC had 24,087, PPP had 11,644, NPP polled 20,024, PNC 51, while the independent had 45 votes. The total valid votes cast were 56,456.
Hannah Tetteh down
In the Awutu Senya West Constituency, Mr George Andah of the NPP defeated NDC guru Hannah Tetteh by polling 28,867 votes.
Hannah Tetteh secured 25,664 votes.
In the presidential contest, CPP polled 99, NDP had 151, NDC 24,845, PPP polled 406, NPP 28,874, PNC 38 and the independent candidate had 13.
In the Effutu Constituency, television personality Eric Don Arthur was floored by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Alex Afenyo Markin.
The Agona West seat was taken by the NPP’s Mrs Cynthia Morrison, who had 32,770 votes and won the seat by about 9,000 votes. Charles Obeng-Inkoom, the incumbent NDC MP, had 22,367 votes.
Mfantseman, Asikuma Odoben Brakwa and Upper Denkyira East and West, Awutu Senya East has also been taken by the NPP.
