'Only Amidu-Konadu Ticket Can Save NDC' - Lecturer

A Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Polytechnic has said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will continue to remain in opposition if they fail to present a Martin Amidu and Nana Konadu Rawlings ticket for the 2020 elections.

The former Attorney General and 2016 flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), the Lecturer said can do the magic for the NDC in 2020.

According to Thomas Kusi Boafo, retaining President John Dramani Mahama as the flagbearer for the NDC in the next presidential election will not only send the party into opposition but will lead to chaos in the party.

“It’s not the best for Mahama to come back. They should bring Martin Amidu as flagbearer and allow Nana Agyeman-Rawlings the chance to be his running mate. This will work for the NDC; otherwise, they would stay in opposition for a long time. It has to work for them,” he stated on Accra-based Okay FM.

Explaining what led to the defeat of the NDC in the 2016 polls, the political commentator and analyst said: “the NPP with regards to Dr. Bawumia limited politics from the ordinary rhetoric to the issue based system. Politics was reduced to the ordinary voter doorstep; giving them exactly what they wanted to hear pertaining to their economic status.

“NPP proved they had a better economic management team than the NDC in terms of professionalism and credibility. Amissah Arthur as a politician should have rubbished the 170 questions posed to him by Dr Bawumia but he rather gave a crippled excuse to counter him, and that was a loss…,” he added.

The lecturer disclosed that NDC’s increment of taxes, staying in the court of the IMF, power crisis ‘Dumsor’, corruption, character assassination, failure of the Green Book, weak campaign team and lack of an arrow head such as Jerry John Rawlings brought them to a standstill in the presidential race.

“Rawlings gave Akufo-Addo the heads up and deemed him incorruptible. NDC’s policies and programs under the IMF went against them. Employers and businessmen were crying since taxes were high. Power crisis should not be left out".

He added that “If NDC is not around NPP won’t work. I love it when NDC is in opposition because they give NPP tough time to function. I really love it. They bark on them to work and that’s what we need."
