Police at Bawku in the Upper East Region have instituted some strategic security measures to maintain the peace in the area enjoyed during the election period, into the yuletide.

Bawku is a known hotbed owing to political and ethnic differences that have escalated to violent clashes in the past.

But in a Citi News interview, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Lovelace Tefutor Kaledzi, said the police will enhance their patrol and intelligence gathering efforts to maintain the peace in the area.

She noted that “for the first time ever, we had a very successful election without any incident,” and this was going to be complemented by security directives from the police headquarters for the New Year and Christmas festivities.

Chief Superintendent Kaledzi said “we have gotten plans from headquarters which we call operational orders that have been drawn for all divisions and regions that we are implementing.”

As part of the measures to ensure the peace is maintained, she said, “we will intensify patrols and make sure that dens of criminals are torched and people known to carry out criminal activities picked up.”

Chief Superintendent Kaledzi, however, assured that the police in the area would not be overly aggressive in their attempts to maintain the peace in the area.

“We are implementing it in such a way that we would not want to infringe on the rights of people who are also enjoying the festivities so we are doing it in such a way that we protect lives and properties before, during and after the elections and also during the festivities.”
