Twelve persons were on Monday afternoon seriously injured in an accident that occurred on the Cape Coast-Takoradi road stretch.

The victims are currently at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital (Interburtons) receiving treatment.

The incident which occurred at a spot near the Adisadel College around 2pm involved a Sprinter Bus with registration number GT 4886 – 16 which had 19 passengers on board and a motor bike.

Eyewitnesses say the driver of the Sprinter bus was overspeeding and in an attempt to avoid running into the motor bike, he instead rammed into a nearby tree and in the process, injured about 12 people who were on board the vehicle.

The Central Regional Road Safety Director, Stephen Anokye, who assessed the situation told Kasapa 102.5 FM’s Baah Acheamfour that the driver of the Sprinter Bus could have saved the situation if he was not overspeeding.

“When I moved to the accident scene, I saw the accident vehicles there – the motor and the sprinter bus. The cause of the accident was that the motor bike which was coming from Adisadel College entered the road without making sure that the road was safe. At the same time that the motor entered the road, the Sprinter bus which was coming from Third Ridge Junction and heading towards Cape Coast town had gotten to the same place. And so, in an attempt to save the motor rider, the Sprinter  bus run into a tree standing by the road side.”

“The vehicle was badly damaged. A lot of people got injured – about twelve of them. They have all been taken to the Central Regional Hospital (Interburtons). If you look at the impact, it clearly shows that he[driver] was over speeding. The impact wouldn’t have been great, if the driver was not on top speed.  And so, we expect drivers to adhere to road safety regulations. The normal speed limit when you approach a town is 50kmh but from the look of things, the driver of the sprinter bus was speeding more than that.”
