Mr Kaizaro Awoye Morganu, Secretary of the Tapa Boat Owners Association, has blamed market women whose stores and stalls are being submerged by the rising floods from the Volta Lake for refusing to occupy a new market provided for them at Abotoase.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Abotoase, Mr Morganu said the Jasikan District Assembly built a market close to the old one 10 years ago but the people refused to occupy it.
He described the old market built on the western bank of a stream as a "loading market" where property is destroyed whenever the lake rises.
Meanwhile, the Volta Lake continues to rise and has submerged almost half of the old market as well as houses.
Reports reaching Kwamikrom speak of destruction of farms and houses at Odomiabra, Tadiani, Amaniokoe and Cape Coast all along the lake in the Jasikan District.
On boat disasters, Mr Morganu commended the efforts of the Ghana Maritime Authority for stationing navy personnel for checking overloading of boats at Abotoase that has helped to prevent major boat disasters since 2006.
Mr Morganu suggested that a patrol boat should be given to the navy personnel to enhance their performance on the lake.
He said navy personnel are also based at Kete-Krachi, Kpando, Dambai, Jemini and Yeji.
