Lets Respect And Abide By The Presidential Emolument Law - Dr. Mahama

Dr. Edward Mahama has added his voice to the controversy which arose from the request of former President John Mahama to keep the Vice Presidential residence as his official retirement home, saying the emolument law must be respected.

Former President John Mahama as part of his retirement package requested from the incoming Akufo-Addo administration to keep the No.3, Prestige Link, Cantonments bungalow and also use bungalow No.6, 3rd Avenue, Ridge as his office.

These requests of the former President however generated a lot of disparagement, especially from the quarters of the ruling New Patriotic Party [NPP] as many are convinced that his residential request was outrageous as he could have requested for a residence at any other place except the one for Vice Presidents in the country.

In view of these condemnations, former President Mahama formally withdrew both request.

Commenting on this on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' Morning Show, the 2016 Presidential Candidate of the People’s National Convention [PNC], Dr. Edward Mahama averred the country has performed poorly in handling its former Presidents.

“ . . basically how we handle our former Presidents, I think we need to put some sort of considerations into it. 20 years after we have gone to the 4th Republic, the issue keeps cropping up,” he averred.

“I don’t know the agreement that transpired between the NPP and NDC transition teams but there is a transition law; there is also at least two committees set up to look into the emolument of past Presidents and so let’s respect and follow those and everybody will be happy,” he opined.
