Road Accidents: Central Region Records Huge Numbers In 2016

Central Region placed an unenviable second on the list of regions that recorded a high level of road accidents in the country, National Road Safety Commission Manager, Stephen Anokye has revealed.

Stephen Anokye is thus urging passengers to report any reckless driving to the Police.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Anokye disclosed that available data at the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) indicates that there were about 788 reported cases of road accidents with a total number of 1,168 vehicles involved.

The total number of persons involved in the road accidents was 1136 with 1,149 of them recording various degrees of injuries.

"Pedestrian knockdowns continue to rise at an alarming rate in spite of the education. In 2016, there were about 225 pedestrian knockdowns representing an increase of 51% over the same period of 2016, the cause of these crashes in the region is human error that's, speeding, wrongful overtaking, tire bust, flouting road signs and regulations and fatigue driving," he said.

According to him, passengers are the second most vulnerable road users in Ghana as passenger related deaths account for almost 20% of all road accidents in the Central Region.

Mr. Anokye appealed to the Police to bring back the traffic Police for their routine traffic checks on the roads to regulate road users and ensure there are no recklessness on the part of vehicular drivers.
