Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs says it is "nonsense" for Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh to continue his stay in office following his landmark electoral defeat.

Contributing to Peace FM's Kokrokoo, Allotey Jacobs noted that should President Yahya Jammeh fail to hand over power, it may lead to chaos in the country.

The upheaval, he said, may eventually affect Ghana because the people of Gambia will be compelled to seek asylum in neighbouring countries.

Allotey Jacobs expressed worry over the "stubbornness" of Mr. Jammeh to leave office for the President-elect Adama Barrow to head the State, claiming Mr. Jammeh's attitude is one of the reasons the western world disrespects Africans.

He wondered why Mr. Jammeh has hardened his heart to concede defeat, stressing that Africa has embraced democracy and so, "democracy has to work".

"How will the western world respect Africans? I think we have come of age," he added.

Allotey Jacobs called for a military intervention in the Gambian situation, stating emphatically that "West Africa should not entertain this nonsense. We’ve come far. Any upheaval that will occur in Gambia, Ghana will suffer the most. Take it from me. They will run to seek asylum here. Due to our peaceful nature, everybody would want to settle here…It doesn’t augur well for the people of Gambia. The best thing is to kick him out.”
