Twenty-four people died from 27 motor bike accidents in the Upper West Region as at September this year as against 23 deaths recorded from 43 car and bus accidents during the same period last year.
Mr. John Ferguson Dzineku, Upper West Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service revealed in an interview with told Ghana News Agency.
He attributed the problem to the influx of students from the University for Development Studies (UDS) and Wa Polytechnic who use these motor bikes mostly, but lacked the necessary skills and experience to ride home safely.
He said most of them did not have driving licenses, adding that acquiring a driving license through the proper way would enable them go through some test that would offer them the basic understanding of road traffic regulations.
Mr. Dzineku said the Police were on the alert to arrest people who ride in town without driving license.
Mr. Suleiman Abdul-Karim, Upper West Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, said most victims of motor bike accidents deaths did not wear helmets.
He added that alcoholism, over speeding and using vehicles without effective lighting system in the night contributed to the spate of accidents in the region.
