Scores of individuals and groups in the Volta Region are pushing for the election of a female to represent the Region on the Council of State.

Only two women; Mama Attratoh II, Queen mother of Ho Dome and Miss Shalom Lumor, a Journalist, are among the 21 aspirants for the single slot.

The urge for a female representative appeared to be reaching a crescendo with many saying it is time for women and that men had had their time since the dawn of the Fourth Republic.

Mr Harrison Belley, a Governance Expert, said it was time for the Region to experience a balance in choosing a female representative on the Council of State.

“Club 50” a social Club with focus on the development of Volta Region described Mama Attratoh as the “best candidate,” and “well cut-out,” for the position.

Mr Dickson Pi-Bansah, Secretary of the Club, said Mama Attratoh’s track record placed her ahead of the other candidates.
He said her efforts at getting a dialysis unit at the Volta Regional Hospital, construction of classroom blocks for basic and tertiary institutions in the Region and her women empowerment activities were indications of her hunger for the rapid development of the Region.

Mr Pi-Bansah said the election of Mama Attratoh on the Council of State for the Region would serve as positive influence on women in the Region and inspire young girls to aspire to greatness.

Madam Comfort Ablometi, Volta Regional Director, Department of Gender, told the Ghana News Agency that, the election of a woman to represent the region would help fight teenage pregnancy and push women development policies and help keep girls in school.
