Pregnant Girls Urged To Continue Their Education

The Gomoa West District Director of Education, Mr Fred Dunyoh, has appealed to parents and philanthropists to assist girls in the district who were found to be pregnant during the Basic Education Certificate Examination this year to continue their education. He said the results of girls in general in the district including those who got pregnant last year and this year were better than the previous years. Mr Dunyoh said this at a day's sensitization meeting on Community-Based Monitoring System (CBMS) for opinion leaders in the Gomoa West District at Apam. He said 37 girls were pregnant while writing their BECE in 2008 and 25 in 2009. He said these girls must be encouraged to continue their education because they were among those who got good grades in the BECE. Mr Ernest Adjei of the Forum of African Women (FAWE), an NGO, said girl child education is not a moral or social issue but a developmental one. He therefore appealed to parents to send their girls to school and assist them to reach a high level. Mr Steve Bruce, a retired educationist called for the revival of the FM station at Apam that was closed down and that it helped to promote education when it was operating. The Queenmother of Apam Nana Essel Botwe III, appealed to other traditional rulers to make by-laws that would stop children from taking part in wake-keeping and other funeral activities.
