Abortion Specialist Arrested

A self-styled medical doctor who allegedly aborts unwanted pregnancies in his house at Kasoa in the Central Region has been remanded by an Accra circuit court. Samuel Kwame Kennedy, also known as Annan, who is said to have been practicing for 20 years in a number of hospitals, is facing two counts of practicing medicine without authority and possession of forged documents. After the facts of the case were read, he was remanded to appear again before the court, presided over by Mr. D. E. K Dake-tsey, on November 16, because investigation was ongoing. Prosecution told the court yesterday that there has been public condemnation of the suspected activities by some of his victims by some of his victims saying the accused persons clients normally screamed to the hearing of passers-by when he is performing operation. ASP A.A. Annor said on October 20, this year, at about 7:30a.m, Kennedy was traced to his house by the Bureau of National Investigations officials and arrested him. A search of his room led to the retrieval of quantities of assorted drug bottles, unsterilized and rusty syringes, drip stands, as well as a number of certificates he claimed to have obtained from the medical school for the practice. It included certificate of medical competence as a Junior office obtained in February 1987, certificate of registration as a qualified nurse obtained in 1993, all of which were awarded him by one Dr. Kwaku Aggrey. He also had in his possession, a certificate in Bachelor of Arts in English from Ashes University in China, obtained on July 12, 1984 and another Certificate in Business English obtained on April 5, 1989 from the University of Maine in the US. The prosecution said Kennedy claimed that the certificates were obtained from recognized universities, adding that although he claimed to have obtained a doctorate degree in China, he could not produce a Ghanaian passport and his license of practice. ASP Annor told the court that during interrogation, Kennedy claimed to be a medical practitioner and has been practicing for 20 years until two years ago when he collapsed, and thus began practicing in his house. Kennedy was said to have mentioned the Cape Coast General Hospital, Islamic Community Clinic, and Ekumfi Islamic Community clinic, Eyisam, as some of the medical facilities where he practiced. He admitted in his caution statement that he charged his clients between GH30 when he performed the abortion and a flat rate of GH5 as consultation fee.
