School Block Poses Threat To Pupils

Akosombo Ketem M/A Primary School, established in 1981 at Ayermesu, a farming community in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality of the Eastern Region, is now a death trap posing a threat to the pupils, according to DAILY GUIDE sources.

The only structure that houses the pupils was constructed by the community in the year stated above and since then the community has reportedly not seen any improvement in terms of school infrastructure. Several appeals to the previous government and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area have proved futile.

According to sources, the old and deplorable building could collapse any time, which could result in death(s) as happened in the Central Region recently.

Also the school lacks basic facilities such as tables, thereby making teaching and learning difficult, a source indicated.

“On a visit to the school by officials of the previous government to ascertain the state of the death trap, they deem it fit to rather add the school to the school feeding programme and ignored the building,” a parent told this paper.

The situation, as gathered, has led to many parents/guardians withdrawing their children from the school, thereby seriously denying them access to basic education.

The assistant head teacher who doubles as the assemblyman for the community, has reportedly appealed to civil society organizations, NGOs, philanthropists and corporate Ghana to come to the aid of the School in order to forestall losing of lives and improve on teaching and learning.

In a brief interaction with the P.T.A Chairman, Joseph Teye Tetteh, he observed that the situation was affecting the academic performance of the pupils and called on the government to do something about it.
