The Accra Circuit Court “One” yesterday jailed a trader, Awale Fuseini, of Ablekuma, 15 years in hard labour for robbing a taxi driver at Sakaman near Dansoman in the Greater Accra Region.
The convict and his friend (on the run) stopped Kingsford Agyiri at about 2:30 am at the Kaneshie First Light on October 2, 2014, and hired him to take them in his cab with registration number GX 5837-18 to Sakaman.
According to the prosecutor, Superintendent Kwaku Bempah, on reaching Sakaman Estates, the accomplice pretended paying the transport fare but Fuseini rather pulled out a knife from his pocket and told the taxi driver to surrender all the sales he had made including the car keys else they would kill him.
The prosecutor said that when the complainant (Agyiri) resisted, the convict and his accomplice assaulted and dragged him from the taxi, and sped off taking along his (complainant) mobile phone valued at GH¢200.00 and GH¢100.00 cash.
He said that the police received information in October 30, 2014, that the taxi had been changed to a private car with a new registration number GE 8142-14 instead of its original number GX 5837-14, parked at Bubiashie.
Supt. Bempah said the police rushed to the place and towed the car to the Odorkor District Police Headquarters, and later arrested Awale Fuseini at Bortianor near Weija where he had gone to hide.
In his judgement, Mr. Aboagye Tandoh said that if the convict had concentrated solely on his trading to earn a decent living, he would not have come into conflict with the law.
He said that the 15 years imprisonment would teach the convict a lesson to either completely transform or face a harsher punishment in future should he fail to amend his ways.
