Akwatia ‘Hairdresser’ MP delivers powerful address to constituents

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Mercy Adu Gyamfi, aka Ama Sey, was the centre of attraction on the ocassion of Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebration at Akwatia, after delivering what has been described by many as a ‘powerful’ message.

The MP who is a beautician by profession, exhibited her ‘great eloquence’ while she addressed the gathering at the Independence day parade, with an advise to the students to take their studies seriously to ensure they become the future leaders that Ghana needs.

The beautiful MP became popular in the runup to last year’s general election after the then incumbent MP for the area and Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal reportedly described her as an unfit hairdresser to occupy the Akwatia Parliamentary seat.

He’s said to have advised the people of Akwatia against voting for Madam Sey saying she was not good enough to be an MP since her background as hairdresser will make her worthless when she is voted as MP.

Baba Jamal maintained that unlike him who is a professional politician and a lawyer, the then NPP aspirant would not be able to catch up with the proceedings of the House and lobby for development for the area.

His advice fell on deaf ears as voters rather gave Madam Sey a resounding victory over him.

Madam Sey, a beautician polled 21,433 votes to beat Mr Jamal’s 15,905 votes.
