A group of honey tappers has burnt down a six-unit classroom block of Tamaligu M/A Primary School in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality following their inability to properly tap honey at the school.
The group went to the school at night to tap honey but failed to properly handle the process resulting in the burning of the classroom block and all other property of the school including books and furniture.
Mr Philip Issahaku Ziblim, the Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Director of Education, announced this at a parade of pupils and students of the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality to mark the 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations at Savelugu on Monday.
Mr Ziblim said the incident happened a fortnight ago and had forced the school authorities to be organising classes at a make-shift structure for pupils.
He said the situation was affecting academic exercise as the school did not have books and furniture to ensure effective teaching and learning.
Meanwhile, no arrest has been made yet.
Mr Ziblim also spoke about educational outcomes in the Municipality, expressing worry about the poor reading habit amongst pupils.
He said the Municipal Directorate of Education had decided to allow a month for all schools in the Municipality to teach pupils how to read at their grade levels in a bid to address the poor reading habit amongst the pupils.
Mr Issaka Braimah Basintale, Savelugu/Nanton Municipal Coordinating Director, who read President Nana Akufo-Addo’s address, said “We must take pride in our diversity by all means, but the Ghanaian must always rise above the ethnic or sectional interest.”
