After series of new items by the Ghana Palaver newspaper on the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the �Ghana Palaver� went to town to take the views of the public on our stories and the verdict was that WAEC should be probed by the government now. The pubic felt the rot at the Council could negate the credibility of certificates being awarded by the Council hence the need to clear those responsible for the present rot at WAEC. Mr. Timothy Boamah, a banker, whose child was among the 50% Junior High Schools students who failed this year�s, said �this government is too slow on certain matters. WAEC is now a hopeless place and if care is not taken, its certificates will operate only in Ghana. Government should probe the place and above all remove that woman heading the national office of the Council� Alugba Fiayomey, a trader at New Market of Nii Boiman, said it is very annoying as to how the government was handling WAEC after the �Ghana Palaver� disclosures. �That institution is a failed one and unless government intervenes, the rot there will still be there. It is a very sensitive establishment and government should kick out the square pegs the round holes. Senior staff there should be investigated. They are spoiling our children�s future�, she noted. Mr. Joe Bradford, a trotro driver said �a probe is the best solution for that place. Has that woman bought the Atta Mills Government? She has spoilt an otherwise respected institution�, he said. Mr. Adamu Tinga, a security guard said the monopoly given to WAEC to conduct examinations has intoxicated that establishment to do things as they please. �While our children are now at the mercy of these people, their children, may be, are studying abroad, hence they are careless as to what befalls our children. They should all be sacked and the government should act fast�, he said. Yvonne Ameh, a student, said WAEC is a hopeless institution corrupting students with examination papers, �How could people supposed to conduct examinations for students, steal exam papers and sell them to students. The government should do something about that place. They are all corrupt people. As for that woman, I don�t know whether she is actually qualified to head the national office. She is a failure and must go. The place should be probed by the government now�, she bemoaned. The totality of all those interviewed by the �Ghana palaver� pointed to one fact. That is WAEC should be probed to bring some sanity to the council for its certificates to be respected worldwide. Meanwhile, teachers recruited by the Council to invigilate at last year�s Council examinations, are yet to be paid and have vowed to take the Council to court if WAEC fails to pay them their emoluments.
