After some 25 years of its existence as a university, the premier campus of the University for Development Studies, Nyankpala campus is faced with acute water shortage with students not having water to bath.
The situation has resulted in the low turnout of students to lectures and other academic activities.
Some angry students who spoke to DAILY GUIDE on condition of anonymity said they were made to pay an amount of GH₵ 92.00 as SRC dues in the 2016/2017 academic year with the explanation that a good number of mechanized boreholes would be drilled to ensure availability of water when the taps stop flowing.
“As it stands now, nothing has been done or said about that project, we survive on pure water for bathing and cooking.”
The students of the University expressed their disappointment in school authorities and the student leadership for their inability to meet their needs.
Though the get supplies from a water tanker, the students claimed it was not sufficient for the entire student body so some of them were forced to buy a gallon of water at GH₵ 5.00 in the town for bathing, cooking and washing.
The University for Development Studies (UDS) Public Relations Officer, Madam Sawda told DAILY GUIDE that the school authorities have put a lot of measures in place to mitigate the water situation.
According to her, the measures would make it easy for the students to get access to water in the interim.
She however indicated that for the long term, the Ghana Water Company has already been contacted and they presented a proposal which the University has approved
“So something is going to be done to solve the situation permanently,” she assured
