Jomoro Assembly Fails To Elect Presiding Member

The Jomoro District Assembly in the Western Region, failed to elect a new Presiding Member at a special general meeting held last week.

The sole candidate vying for the position, Mr John Yankey, a banker, failed to secure the two-thirds members of the house to get the nod as per Order 10 (1) of the Model Standing Orders of District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies, after two rounds of voting.

He got 19 ‘yes’ votes with 26 ‘no’ while one ballot was rejected out of the total of 46 votes cast at the first round of voting.

In the second round, he obtained 20 votes, 26 votes against and one rejected ballot out of the total 47 votes cast.

According to Order 10 (5) of the Model Standing Orders, he was supposed to obtain 34 votes to occupy the seat.

Earlier, MrYankey appealed to the house to repose its confidence in him to steer the affairs of the house in the next two years for the development of the District.

The District Coordinating Director and Acting District Chief Executive, MrBoffour Ahmed Haruna, in his welcoming address, indicated that the seriousness with which the members were going about the election showed they were poised for action.

MrYankey expressed gratitude to all and sundry and the Independence Anniversary Planning Committee for their support and a successful Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary celebration in the area.
