Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. John Tia, has disclosed that as a result of the variation between the Chinery Hesse Report and that of the Greenstreet Report, government finds it difficult in releasing the ex-gratia due Members of Parliament (MPs) of the previous parliament. According to him, following �public outcry about the quantum of the payment that was to be made to the MP�s, the president set up a committee (headed by Ishmael Yamson) to look into the matter, for possibly advice.� Speaking in an interview on Joy Fm, the Majority leader, however, indicated that negotiations are still on-going with government on the issue. ��.the Ishmael Yamson Committee submitted its report and recommended that four months of each years� of service be paid to all MP�s, (quite contrary to what the Chinery Hesse Report indicated) that what is happening now�the variation between Chinery Hesse report and that of the Greenstreet is what is in dispute�, and that is what is being negotiated now,� he stated. Hon. John Tia pointed out that though most MPs have complained about the delay in receiving their benefits, there is no date as to when the issue will be tabled before the floor of the house. �We haven�t come to an agreement as to when it will be decided�some are of the opinion that whatever was done in the last parliament cannot be undone by this parliament per say�, since we are still continuing the work of the nation, we should be clothed with some other powers in order to take some decisions but we haven�t cleared the air on that area yet,� He said. According to him, though there was a need to quickly resolve the issue, setting a definite period for bringing closure to the matter will be unwise. �in this matter you cannot be talking of a timetable, because the President is acting in his capacity as the President, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the state and he is investigating, he has got committees in place, he�s got advisors and they are all deliberating, so you cannot have a time line, however, it will be good if it is resolved early so that he will tackle more serious assignments that are ahead of him� there is a new parliament and new conditions of service will have to be passed out again, so it will be good that it is resolved, but there is no time limit,� he stressed.
