THE GHANA Education Service (GES) has placed a ban on the changing of dates of birth by teachers employed by the Service because according rectifying their birth certificates is quite disturbing.
Over 800 workers of GES, mostly teachers, were said to have requested for a change in their dates of birth over the last few months and this has been seen as worrying to management.
It is understood that some teachers and staff of GES change their dates of birth ostensibly to extend their retirement as teachers in the country are supposed to retire at age 60.
A statement issued by the GES indicated, “Management of the GES is perturbed over the unprecedented number of GES staff requesting for a change in their dates of birth resulting in various movements from their stations to the district and regional education offices as well as the GES headquarters.
“To date, management has received and worked on over 800 applications on change of dates of birth alone and this constitutes a waste of quality time of management as it involves a great deal of scrutiny and referrals,” the statement, signed by Director General, Jacob Kor, pointed out.
The statement continued, “Hence management has decided that every member of staff of the GES should adhere strictly to the guidelines as regards the correction of dates of birth stipulated for implementation by the GES council.
It concluded, “With immediate effect, correction of dates of birth for GES staff has been suspended in the district, region and headquarters till further notice.”
