Addressing a grand durbar of the chiefs and people of the Gbi Traditional Area in Hohoe last Saturday, Dr Bawumia said the government was in haste to fulfil its promises to Ghanaians.

 

The durbar was held in honour of Mr John Peter Amewu, a son of the area, following his appointment as the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

 

Mr Amewu was presented with a parcel by the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VI, and a delegation of his elders as a token to honour him for his appointment.

 

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including chiefs, Members of Parliament, the Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu Ekuful; the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, and a Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mrs Barbara Oteng-Gyasi.

 

Development agenda

 

Dr Bawumia said the country was fortunate to have President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, whose main focus was to pursue an agenda for job creation and national development.

 

The commitment of the government, he said, was exhibited in its budget which captured its plans to restore teachers and nurses training allowances, introduce free education, implement the “one district, one factory” policy, earmark $1 million for constituency development and the establishment of the Zongo Development Fund.

 

That commitment, he said, went to prove a fact that “President Nana Akufo-Addo is a man of his own words and is engaged daily in the business for which he was elected”.

 

While calling for the support of all Ghanaians, Dr Bawumia said whether the government would succeed or not would depend on the populace, as “a key part of the job creation agenda is creating a vibrant private sector”.

 

He said the government had done well trying to stabilise the cedi, adding that it was working hard to keep the cedi stable and bring down inflation and interest rates.

 

Commendation

 

While commending Mr Amewu for the work he, as the Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and his executives did that contributed to the party’s victory in the 2016 elections, Dr Bawumia described him as an ‘elephant’ who fought with the heart of a lion for which the party was grateful.

 

He said it was no wonder that the President recognised Mr Amewu’s capability as a gem of the Gbi State, the Volta Region and Ghana and had appointed him to be part of his Cabinet to manage the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources.

 

The Vice-President said he was of the firm belief that with the likes of Mr Amewu working to support the President, the transformation agenda was possible.
