Workers around the country yesterday marked this year’s May Day, with a call on them by the Coordinating Director at the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Abass Ketigwie Beacher, to be concerned with practices that tend to create wastage at their work places.
According to Mr. Beacher, activities such as over-invoicing, wasting of stationEry materials, reporting late to work, closing before time and working lotto during working hours, lead to wastage which does not promote productivity.
Mr. Beacher made the call while addressing workers during the celebration at Bolgatanga.
Workers’ groups under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) gathered at the Bolgatanga Jubilee Park with placards some of which read, “Stop Punishing Workers With Validation,” “This May Day Is Dry,” “No Money In Pocket” and “Nana, We Need Our Arrears.”
The Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari, advised workers not to only ask for what will make them enjoy live, but should also think about the growth of the various institutions and serve the public efficiently to merit their demands.
He also used the occasion to warn workers, especially those in the public service, against making “unproductive” phone calls when there are clients to attend to or there are loads of work to discharge.
He charged workers to become watch dogs at their work places and their communities, to protect the interest of the country, especially against the smuggling of subsidized fertilizers and petroleum products.
“I want to use this opportunity to call on all workers, especially those working in border districts and towns, to help in the fight against the smuggling of subsidized fertilizers across the borders to neighbouring countries.,” Mr Bukari charged.
