Herdsmen, Big Threat To Planting For Food And Jobs’ Programme

Farmers at Hweehwee in the Kwahu East District, participating in the government’s ‘Planting for food and jobs’ programme have appealed to the government to act decisively to stop the destructive activities of Fulani herdsmen, who have invaded the area with their cattle.

They said any inaction could ruin the programme, adding that, the seeds supplied to them were yet to be planted because of the fear that the herdsmen and their animals would come to destroy these.

Their spokesperson, Mr. Charles Danquah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the herdsmen remained a big threat to the success of the programme.

He said improved seeds and fertilizers had already been distributed to farmers at Hweehwee, Atta-Ne-Atta, Oboyan, Asesieso and Mepemasem but the presence of the Fulani and their cattle had become a big disincentive.
The fear of losing their crops was holding many of them back, he added.

Mr. Solomon Aboagye, the assembly member for Hweehwee, hailed the support given to the farmers under the ‘Planting for food and jobs’ programme and asked the government to go the extra mile to find lasting solution to the destruction of food crop farms and water sources by the herdsmen.

It should be tackled with the same energy and fearlessness as being done with illegal mining (galamsey).
