Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resource, on Thursday said government was working on the establishment of a National Sanitation Authority.

Mr Adda noted that the Authority when successfully established, would be responsible for the proper management of sanitation issues in the country.

He said this at the official opening of Jekora Ventures Limited (JVL) Fortifer Compost Plant at Borteyman in the Tema Metropolis.

The plant was a public-private partnership project between JVL, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Training Research and Networking for Development (TREND) to process liquid and solid waste into organic fortifer fertilizer.

He announced that the government was developing a policy to get the bill in Parliament for approval for the setting up of the National Sanitation Authority.

The proposed Authority, he indicated, would have a national director and other directors at the regional and district levels who would work with the sanitation managing teams in their vicinities with focus on proper management of sanitation.
Mr Adda stated that a sanitation fund would be part of the bill to enable the Authority and his outfit get adequate funds to partner the private sector to develop more waste landfill sites and composite plants to process waste into energy and fertilizer.

He said environmental sanitation remained a top priority of the government, owing to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declaring his resolve to make Accra one of the cleanest cities in Africa.

He added that for that reason, government was in the process of revising the environmental sanitation policy to make it more responsive to the present needs of the people and the country.
