The policeman, who is standing trial before the Ho Magistrate Court One for stealing a motorbike, General Constable Sambo Umaru Alhassan, has been interdicted.
The Volta Regional Police Commander, ACP Nana Asomah, who confirmed this to The Ghanaian Times, said: “You do not expect a police officer to appear in the dock in uniform”.
Constable Alhassan, 25, has made two appearances before the court and pleaded not guilty to stealing.
Jointly charged with him is his alleged accomplice, Ali Sulemana, 22, a driver, who has also pleaded not guilty to the same charge.
Chief Inspector Sheila Odai, who presented the facts, told the court presided by Mr. Robert Addo that the policeman was involved in “many criminal offences”.
According to the prosecution, on April 21, this year, Ali called Sambo on phone and asked him to assist him with some money.
The court heard that that the policeman who was on duty at the Ho K.K. House traffic light intersection, left his duty post on an unregistered motorbike for Ho Zongo, to transport Ali on the motor bike and they left together for his (policeman) house at the Ho Voradep Village.
There, the policeman changed into mufti before transporting Ali on his motorbike to a spot at Akwetey, where he went into the bush before returning to Ali with a Sanya motorbike with a Togolese registration number, AY 6383.
Sambo asked Ali to help him to send the bike to Ho.
Ali obliged, but on their way to Ho the motorbike which Ali was riding ran out of fuel.
The policeman then managed to push the motorbike with his foot while riding the other one, until they got to the Mile 48 police barrier at Ho.
The court was told that the duty officers at the barrier demanded to know the owner of the motorbikes.
There and then Sambo made a quick U-turn, saying that he was going to call the owner of the bikes and fled the scene, the prosecution said.
As Sambo failed to return to the barrier, and Ali was arrested by the barrier duty officers.
Sambo was also nabbed the next day when the owner of the stolen bike, Francis Akpese, identified it at the Ho Central Police Station, and submitted all relevant documents covering the bike to the police.
The[U1] prosecution said that the accused persons admitted the offence in the caution statements to the police.
The court has granted them bail in the sum of GHS 4,000 each with two sureties.
They two accused persons will appear before the court again on May 31.
