Zongos Wage War Against Lesbians, Gays

Members of predominantly Muslim communities in Ghana, popularly known as Zongos, have braced themselves to wage war against persons involved in same sex relationship within their neighbourhoods.

They have therefore threatened to attack and kill any Muslim perceived to be having same-sex relationships, a move they consider as the Jihad of wiping out the evils of our society.

Delivering a Friday sermon, popularly known in Arabic as ‘Utuba’, at Ikamah Mosque at Ntonso in the Ashanti region, Mallam Abass Mahmud, a local cleric, thanked the vigilante group for attacking and cleaning out any persons believed to be practicing what he described as the dirty importation of the whiteman’s culture into our beautiful society.

“I urge you all to champion the Jihad of wiping the evils of our society. Should anyone sense or hear about gay or lesbian in any part of Ghana, you should attack these infidels by showing them that, they don’t belong to this world,” he added.

According to Mallam Abass, Allah gets annoyed when the same sex are having sexual intercourse, and such disgusting encounters cause earthquakes and other natural disasters.

According him, the collapse of ancient cities like Sodom and Gommorah, during the reign of Prophet Lut, was the result of the practice of homosexuality, and therefore, called for a holy war against lesbians and gays in Ghana.

The concerns raised by the local Cleric follows the increasing pace at which some Muslims have involved themselves in same sex relationships in Muslim communities across the country.

Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, a member of the special secret taskforce set up in the various Muslim communities to track and punish those perceived to be gays and lesbians, mentioned Jamilatu Ismail and Ayisha Sule as some Muslims who are on the wanted list of the ‘hit squad’.

According to the man, who wants to remain anonymous, the families of the two ladies have joined the crusade to hunt for them (Jamilatu Ismail and Ayisha Sule), describing it as a directive by the Almighty Allah and teachings of the Holy Quran.

Other persons wanted for their involvement in same sex relationships in the area include, Hajia Kande Bakari, Yakubu Ahmed, Mallamfa Salifu, Abiiba Abukari, Mohammed Danjuma and Fatima Habib among others, explaining that the whereabouts of the above mentioned are unknown.

He noted that Hajia Kande Bakari, Yakubu Ahmed, Mallamfa Salifu, Abiiba Abukari, Mohammed Danjuma and Fatima Habib disappeared from the area soon after the inauguration for the special secret taskforce.
