Two Cameroonians and a Sierra Leonean have been arrested by the Adabraka police for allegedly stealing a Nissan March cab at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
The suspects are Rodricque Funbad, 26; Clovis Funbad, 24 and Mohammed Darany, 23 – all workers of Mohammed Recycling Plant Company at Adabraka. They purportedly attempted to transport the vehicle to Togo, when the police in Tema accosted them at a snap check point at the T T Brothers’ area.
Confirming the story to DAILY GUIDE, the Nima Divisional crime officer, Superintendent Williams Daa, said Kwabena Boamah, owner of the Nissan March with registration number GX 6012-14, on May 27, 2017, parked it at the Nkrumah Circle with the ignition key inside and travelled to Effiduase in the Eastern Region.
Rodricque Funbad, while going to work on that fateful day, reportedly spotted the vehicle parked with the key inside and told his friends about it.
While returning in the evening, the vehicle was still parked there unattended to but with a flat tyre and so the three allegedly hatched a plan to steal it.
Rodricque then called his younger brother, Clovis Funbad, and Mohammed Darany and together, they purportedly went to where the vehicle was parked to change the flat tyre.
Mohammed, an unlicensed driver, according to the police officer, jumped into the driver’s seat, took hold of the steering wheel and together, they drove the vehicle to an unknown destination where the number plate of the vehicle was removed.
Supt. Williams Daa disclosed that the suspects then drove off towards Aflao, with the intention of crossing the border with the vehicle.
Upon reaching a police checkpoint near TT Brothers’, the suspects were signaled to stop but they refused and drove off.
The police suspected them to be thieves and gave them a hot chase.
According to Supt. Williams Daa, when the suspects were finally apprehended, the police requested for the driver’s licence of Mohammed but he confessed that he was not a licensed driver.
When asked about the car, the suspects could not offer the police any tangible reason and so a search was conducted in it and lo and behold, a driver’s licence bearing the name Kwabena Boamah, together with some documents of his from Adabraka Cooperative Drivers’ Union was discovered.
The owner was immediately called on phone and that was where he went to the Nkrumah Circle to enquire about his car, only to realize that it had been stolen.
He lodged a complaint to the Adabraka police and with their help, the three suspects were brought in to assist in investigations.
The crime officer said the police were yet to ascertain their residential permits.
