The late Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama whose tragic killing by a mob at Denkyira-Obuasi stunned the nation has also resurrected a frank discussion about lynching, mob justice, trust in the police and the menace of illegal mining also now as ‘galamsey’.

But who was Maxwell Adam Mahama?

According to his Facebook profile, he studied abroad at the University of Leicester where gained a Master’s degree in Security and Risk Management. He also attended the University of Ghana where he gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History. Before that he had attended the St John’s School in Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region for his secondary education. He also attended Akosombo International School.

He was the only son of his mum and leaves behind a mother, father, Barbara, his wife and two young children. He married Barbara, his wife in August 2012.

Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul submits that Captain Maxwell Mahama, in his thirties, was a leader of a platoon detailed to a mining company at Denkyira-Obuasi and was posted to the area about three weeks ago to relieve the Commander of the military personnel guarding a local mining company so the Platoon Commander can sit for an examination in Accra.

Mahama’s death tastes even more bitter when it emerged he was to be promoted to a ‘Major’ after successfully passing the examination, few weeks ago.

It is clear he loved his wife, the beautiful Barbara dearly rendering on Facebook that his greatest accomplishment was having her.
