Amnesty International Ghana on Monday condemned the murder of deceased Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira-Obuasi, which occurred on May 29.

A statement signed by Mr Frank Doyi, the Acting Director of Amnesty International Ghana, and copied to the Ghana News Agency said, the act of lawlessness exhibited by some individuals and groups who deliberately target innocent persons and lynch them must be halted.

Mr Doyi said laws of the nation against such act must start to work without discrimination and that under no circumstances must people be a target of this kind of injustice.

According to the human rights organisation, there must be an impartial and effective investigation that would deliver justice to the victims to serve as a deterrent to potential perpetrators.

The statement said the recent tragedy showed that mob violence in Ghana was not dying down, but dangerously on the rise in a way that must put Ghanaians and all law enforcement agencies to be on their toes.

The Amnesty International Ghana urged the Ghana Police Service to treat the matter with urgency and “to further make good use of this opportunity to thoroughly investigate into issues concerning all act of mob violence and lawlessness in the country to hold perpetrators accountable”.

The statement said by so holding perpetrators responsible, it would make all individuals in the communities responsible for their actions.

Mr Doyi called on the state “to seize this opportunity to embark on a comprehensive human right education individually and all communities for citizens to know that mob violence is a violation of fundamental human right and also including the right to security of person and the right to life”.

Amnesty International Ghana, which stands for the protection of human rights worldwide empathised with the families and colleagues of all victims of violence.
