Farmers Threaten Demo Against Chinese Company

Farmers and land owners at Fankyenekor in the Ga South Municipality have threatened to embark on a demonstration against China Railway Wuju Quarry (CRWQ).

According to the residents, the company has failed to compensate them for the effects of their activities on the buildings in the community.

The youth of the community, in a statement said, “we are tired of struggling and have waited patiently for the compensation and cannot bear the struggle any longer.”

According to them, the Chinese quarry’s failure to pay them compensation since 2015 has left them stranded.

A Fankyenekor Town Development Committee member, Mr Ishmael Agyemang, added that the embarrassment of being chased [by other residents] for compensation is unbearable, hence “our decision to demonstrate,” he added.

Mr Agyeman said around 2015, the ‘’CRWQ came to inform the residents that it was about to build them a clinic, a school, a palace, roads, a modern toilet, and also provide them a source of potable water after they sent a letter to the residents indicating their readiness to compensate owners of affected homes and farmlands.”

The chief and elders in the town sat down with the CRWQ management to discuss the necessary steps and plans for the way forward.

“After that we engaged the chiefs and elders who guided us to submit a letter in 2015 but the CRWQ has refused to acknowledge our letter,” he continued.

“If the authorities want us the youth to take the law into our own hands, we will do so without waiting for permit from all the three police stations.”

Chief

The chief of Fankyenekor, Nii Adu Lartey, confirmed to the DAILY HERITAGE in an interview that he gave GH¢ 3,000.00 to the three towns, namely Fankyenekor, Djorseh, and Kankafiona, to calm the youth down after the Chinese company gave him money to be given to them.

Reaction

Attempts to reach the China Railway Wuju Quarry have proved futile. When this reporter visited the facility, nobody was willing to speak about the claims of the residents to her.
